How do I start an art commission?

Posted by blackwater99 - February 9th, 2024

Any ideas on how to do commissions?

The last time I did it I got scammed and lost all of my money and needed to find a way to make funds. Along with job searching as I have no job at all after college. It has been a struggle for me as I tried to find ways to make money without a credit card. How do I start an art and animation commission along with many things I should start with?

Make sure to take the payment upfront or after the first sketch. Never wait until after for the payment since that’s the easiest way to get scammed. Another thing with money is to not undersell yourself unless it’s a limited promotional thing that people will know will end.
Find the right websites to take commissions on. If it’s really a state of emergency, try opening gigs and listings on fiverr and Etsy even though they’re not the best sites for those. It’ll at least help you get seen. Warning about Etsy, you do have a small fee for listings but from what I remember it’s less than a dollar per month? Here, Toyhouse, insta, deviantart and Twitter are all good for visibility and you can post your own art on them as well so others can see it. Make a post or highlight with all your prices and information on the types of comms. Deviantart has a bunch of commissions groups as well to join that people look at specifically for that kind of thing. I got a bunch of comms on deviantart back when I used that just from the group visibility and staying active.
Lmk about any questions, I’ll try to answer as best as I can! :)
